“Yeah.” Wyatt took a deep breath. “Kid, thank you for not saying anything to law enforcement. My family…” he trailed off.
Jordan smiled and looked back down at the tree.
“Look, if you and your mom are ever in Maine, you make sure you drop by, okay? Here’s my address.” Wyatt fished into his pocket and then gave him a scrap of paper. “I’d like to show you some of the footage that we recorded that was never uploaded.”
Jordan stared at the scrap of paper. “I’d like that to see that.”
Wyatt ruffled his hair. “Well I should get back. It’s a long journey home.”
He turned to walk away.
“Wyatt,” Jordan said casting a glance back.
“Yeah?”
“Thank you.”
“For what?”
“For not abandoning me out there.”
Wyatt chuckled. “You know, Jordan, I’d love to take credit for that but that was all Billy.”
Jordan nodded. “Still. Thank you.”
Wyatt jabbed his finger at him, winked and rejoined his family a few feet away. Catherine waited a second or two before walking over and wrapping an arm around his shoulders. “You ready to go, kiddo?”
He turned and gave her a big hug and for a few minutes they stood there in silence before turning back to the visitors center. “You know, mom, I was thinking maybe next year we could leave the tent behind and go on vacation to Miami. Somewhere near the beach, a hotel with a pool, and an all-you-can-eat buffet. What do you say?”
She paused for a second, looked around the park then replied, “As long as it has internet.” Jordan shook his head and laughed as she hugged him tight.
A Plea
Thank you for reading The Year Without Summer. If you enjoyed the book, I would really appreciate it if you would consider leaving a review. Without reviews, an author’s books are virtually invisible on the retail sites. It also lets me know what you liked. It also motivates me to write more books. You can leave a review by visiting the book’s page. I would greatly appreciate it. It only takes a couple of seconds.
Thank you — Jack Hunt
